Neuropsychiatry is a sub-specialty area of psychiatry, concerned specifically with the overlap between and interface of psychiatry, neurology and general medicine. It is a specialised area of psychiatry committed to understanding brain-behaviour relationships, and to the care of individuals who suffer from neuropsychiatric illness. This encompasses patients with psychiatric conditions secondary to organic brain disease, particularly neurological or neurodegenerative disorders. These patients require expertise in psychiatry, neurology, neuropsychology, neuroimaging, neuropharmacology and biological treatment in psychiatry. Neuropsychiatry sits at the interface of acute health and mental health services, and is the "biological face" of mental health assessment and treatment.
